The three storey SRIF facility, designed specifically for Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and Physics, houses student-centered, hands-on learning, scientific research and training opportunities at the advanced under-graduate and graduate levels.  This design incorporates the formal scientific program and simultaneously presents an environment which fosters informal discussion and discipline/cross-discipline collaboration.

The new building is carefully connected to the original Essex Hall by means of a dynamic and clever link which offers programmatic opportunities in excess of those stated in the program outline. The main SRIF building volume is shifted to the west in order to build a concrete-framed building which does not impact or is not impacted by existing Essex Hall.  Nearing completion of the building, a link is then created to reconnect the SRIF to Essex Hall and is designed as an enhancement to the required vertical circulation core.  The Link is envisioned as a cross-building connector, complete with bridges to Essex hall, creating collaborative and informal meeting/learning spaces.

The floor levels have been carefully considered.  The SRIF ground floor is at grade and is interconnected to the Essex Hall’s basement and first level.  The SRIF ground floor has a high ceiling which allows the second-floor plate to be aligned with the second floor of Essex Hall.  This allows excellent opportunity for large and tall main-floor equipment needs. Although provided, circulation between the second and third floors of both buildings does not require an elevator.  Delivery of CCC materials can be independent and do not need to rely on the basement of Essex Hall in the event that route is jeopardized (future development, etc.)

The Municipal Centre is aptly named for its focus on the notion that town services can be consolidated and enhance if put under one roof.  This facility truly stands as a commitment to the community its serves.  The Centre boosts a new 26,000 sf administrative office, an 11,000 sf library and a 3,000 sf Senior’s Centre.  Linking these program components is a large 6,000 sf light-filled atrium which provides access to and connects users to the various services offered within the Centre.  The library offers an outdoor program space for users to enjoy shaded exterior activities, fun, learning or study.

 The building’s atrium is designed to promote informal seating for reading or conversation areas situated on the second floor balcony, bridge and bio-filter living wall.  This “treehouse” effect was inspired by the Carolinian Forests which make up part of LaSalle’s natural beauty – a quality and character that the town wished to incorporate.  The site is re-developed complete with a fountain water feature with sunken plaza, a large paved area for outdoor festivals and events, a relocated cenotaph and gardens with passive seating.

The proposed waterfront expansion will represent a 225% increase in the existing shoreline frontage to be returned and rediscovered for community use and enjoyment. Features include: A Festival Zone, A Heritage Zone, a Sports Zone, A Naturalized Zone and a Passive Zone.  Conceptually, the park’s design gestures draw connections to French Ribbon Farming lines extending from the modern Town “main street’ to the Detroit River.  Features such as huts, trail heads, play areas, and materiality draw their inspiration from Indigenous, French and English iconography and culture.
