J.P. Thomson Architects Ltd.
JPTA has worked on over 900 educational facilities in its long history, from early learning to post-secondary institutions. Our team has a reputation for pushing clients to critically think about the environments within which their students, researchers and staff learn and develop. These institutions are multi-faceted, and our broad range of experience in designing for school architecture, and educational, athletic, social, and research spaces will encourage development and growth.
Over the past decade, JPTA has conducted numerous feasibility and master plans with representation across a variety of market sectors. Whether the task involves land acquisitions, operational concerns, or sequencing and phasing strategies, JPTA has established itself as a guiding force in master planning. We understand scale, large and small, and place significant value on the smallest details. We strive to ensure clients have optimal flexibility, and that the end product enhances their business practices in a meaningful way.
JPTA has vast experience in cost analysis services, with both existing and new construction. We are known for discovering innovative and effective value-enhancing opportunities, and we constantly look for ways in which a project can be designed or constructed to provide significant savings for our clients. Specifically, we focus on the following areas:
JPTA is often called upon to help clients develop project implementation plans due to the complexities of a project’s delivery model. These plans include concept design and are developed in concert with client input, planning, and feedback through a thorough understanding of their specific needs. Whether it’s phase or sequence planning that’s required, JPTA ensures that all information is represented clearly through contract documentation and that an overall picture of expectations, deliverables, and the chronology of events is fully understood.
JPTA is dedicated to preserving a community’s architectural heritage. By considering renewal of our existing buildings and updating them for new uses, our insight represents a progressive attitude towards the environment through preservation, waste reduction and resourcefulness. We embrace a mindset of respecting the past while seeking new opportunities through heritage design to revitalize sites, existing facilities, and campuses. We also have been involved with over 40 projects dealing with heritage buildings in Windsor and its surrounding communities, ranging from the original design of projects that are now part of the local conservancy registry to continued additions and renovations on numerous buildings.
JPTA has amassed a portfolio of work that has successfully, time and again, integrated beautiful buildings and sites with their specific economic objectives. Whether it’s sustainability requirements, municipal submissions, spatial planning, or clever cost-saving solutions, our team is committed to providing innovative and progressive thinking, every step of the way. We are in constant search for an original understanding of architecture – one that remains loyal to the spirit of the client and is steadfastly dedicated to uplifting the human experience. We are highly adept at all phases of project delivery including the preliminary design development, client engagement, coordination of consulting teams, construction documentation, bidding and contract administration.
JPTA is acutely aware of the need for buildings to express an interrelationship between inside and outside. The concept that a building’s exterior character must be intrinsically related to its interior sits at the core of our skill set and interest. We have created spaces for new corporate branding, provided acoustical and security control features, developed multi-functional, contemporary office interiors, and new paradigms for learning spaces as part of our interior architecture services.
JPTA is often asked to develop sign and way-finding packages for its buildings and sites. The primary reason for this revolves around the fact that we have an overall vision of the completed project. By being involved in end-user guidance strategies and systems, we are able to seamlessly merge building code requirements, accessibility standards and overall design integration coordination. We also assist clients in developing world-class marketing and branding packages completely tailored to their physical environment.
At JPTA, sustainability and green design are integral to our design philosophy and approach. Recently, we have completed the following sustainable design components on significant projects:
JPTA is able to provide three-dimensional solutions for projects through the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is the process of generating three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building models for use as contract documentation tools. The process of 3D building modeling produces a structure’s geometry, spatial relationships, quantities and properties within a large database platform, allowing for real-time virtual coordination between consultants so that on-site issues can be minimized.
JPTA considers designing for accessibility an important component of the overall success of any building project. The need for accessible environments requires careful thought, an understanding of the Ontario Building Code, and CSA Standard B651 for advanced parameters. In addition to this required knowledge, JPTA will also meet with a client’s Accessibility Committee to ensure that all aspects of their needs are observed, assessed, and incorporated into the project.
