Owner: Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Duty Free Shop
Location: Windsor, Ontario
Size: 12,000 sf interior renovations and facade work

We were tasked with re-inventing architectural character of the Tunnel Duty Free Shop located adjacent to the Windsor entrance to the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. The original building had an office look, motivating the new design strategy to create an enticing façade which evokes the spirit of a high-end retail store. The original design was angular and disjointed, prompting us to focus on creating continuity on the building’s façade. The new curving perforated aluminum screen is cleverly separated from the original building.

The screen uses parametric design to create a layer of shadows on the existing facade which move and shift based on the sun’s path. The perforated screen also ensures that natural light still flows into the second storey windows of the existing building while maintaining views from the second floor offices. The central tower is clad with spider-clipped glass panels to further accentuate the glamour of the products within. The tower’s focal point is a 17′ x 26′ LED screen which offers automated control of messaging and advertising. Included in the work, was the renovation of the main retail floor interior. JPTA implemented barrier-free and elevator lift work to facilitate the interior design prepared by Ideation Studio of Chicago, Illinois.

Neatly nestled into a uniquely-shaped existing lot, the Sandison Residential Development creates a dynamic, new urban identity in the community of South Windsor. From a design approach, the development merges a combination of townhomes and multi-dwelling units connected via a looping “street”.  Two-storey townhomes have walk-up accessible entrances, while the multi-dwelling units offer attached single-car garages with first and second level living.

Designed for the active, urban resident, this development increases the residential density of the site while promoting a walkable setting. The 47 units comprise a total building area of 60,000 sf.  The experience is bolstered by and supports the immediate, nearby commercial strip to its south.  From schools, to restaurants to medical clinics and shopping, this property creates a unique and intimate residential experience. Architecturally, the developments exhibit an urban look and feel that is synonymous with progressive, walk-able city objectives.

Owner: University of Windsor

Size: 5,000 sf Addition to Heritage-listed Office

Who better to conceive the addition to our old offices than ourselves? J.P. Thomson Architects Ltd. was asked by the new owners to examine the ability of the large property to accommodate additional office space and ensure that the building could be turned into an accessible-friendly facility. Most importantly, the design needed to feel as part of the original building.  Formerly St. Paul’s Anglican Church and originally built in 1948, the building was listed on the municipal heritage registry as an identified property.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.10″ text_font=”swis721 cn bt body||||||||” text_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.7)” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” text_orientation=”center” max_width=”570px” module_alignment=”center” custom_margin=”15px||||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” animation_style=”fade”]

Conceptually, the building’s new design sought to seamlessly create a modern 21st century office, while maintaining a strong sense of character and place. Herein was the challenge.  There was and is a right way and a wrong way when tasked with such an endeavour.  To create an new addition to an old building requires tremendous skill and sensitivity.  Detailing and craftsmanship is paramount.  It was reinvented in a way that creates a minimalist form and shape ensuring that the original building’s character remained and was not challenged by the new intervention. It is not without precedent that the preferred way to expand on an older building is to avoid mimicking its original gestures and details.

In 2004, JPTA won a Built Heritage Award through the Windsor Heritage Committee for recognition of the effort to maintain/restore the original architectural integrity of the property.  If built, the resulting expansion proposition would have won another.
